Emmy Award nominee Paul Mescal accidentally overslept for his big radio interview with Zoe Ball today (July 31).

One of the breakout stars from hit TV adaptation Normal People, the 24-year-old eventually managed to peel himself out of bed at a later time than scheduled, which gave Zoe a few laughs when he rather embarrassedly dialled in to chat.

"Hello," he declared from the other end of the line, while the Radio 2 Breakfast Show host laughed: "Paul Mescal, you dirty stop out!".

"I'm so, so, so sorry," confessed Paul, to which Zoe nicely reflected: "Do you know what, darling, in a week when you're nominated for an Emmy for Normal People, and you do that gig with Dermot Kennedy at the Natural History Museum, I cannot blame you for being asleep at 10 past seven this morning."

The actor explained: "No, I'm so embarrassed, I haven't missed a single interview for however long… I'm so, so sorry!"

The pair's amusing exchange continued on Twitter too, as Paul wrote to Zoe: "I am forever sorry" alongside a crying emoji, after she'd tweeted that "all is forgiven" alongside a video of Paul doing his thing with Dermot.

Meanwhile, Paul previously weighed in on the possibility of a second season of Normal People, in which he played high school student Connell Waldron.

"I do feel like the series that has finished is its own thing, and I'm totally comfortable with that. It's not on the cards at the moment, but if I got the opportunity to play him again, amazing," he told The Mail Online.

Normal People is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
