Nuneaton's A&E department has been hit by the most people ever in one day - and the heat could lead to even more. Yesterday (June 24), the George Eliot Hospital saw a record in its Accident and Emergency department.

There was a whopping 354 people who sought care. Many of them were 'particularly unwell' patients and, with the forecast of scorching weather over the next 24 hours, the department is braced to see potentially even more people.

While the attendees needing care were not directly heat-related, warm weather can worsen conditions, the hospital has said. It has issued advice to the community in a bid to ensure that they are not the next ones needing emergency care.

A hospital spokesperson said: “Warmer weather can worsen conditions and can cause heat exhaustion or more seriously – heatstroke. We advise people to take some simple steps to stay safe in the heat."

These steps include:

  • Keep out of the heat if you can.

  • If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm.

  • Wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes

  • Avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

  • Cool yourself down.

  • Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks

  • Have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.

  • Keep your living space cool by closing windows during the day and opening them at night when the temperature outside has dropped.

  • Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees.

  • Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.
