Princess Eugenie was surprised on telly tonight with a question about why her fiancé waited seven years to pop the question.

The royal family shared the news earlier on Monday (January 22) that the princess and her long-time boyfriend Jack Brooksbank will be tying the knot later this year, much like her cousin Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle.

Also like Harry and Meghan, Princess Eugenie and Jack gave their first TV interview to The One Show, likely expecting some softball questions about the wedding dress and how they first met.

And they did get those types of questions from The One Show's Matt Baker, although he also mixed in a subtle dig at Jack Brooksbank for waiting so long before proposing.

"After seven years, where you wondering what was keeping him so long?" Matt slyly asked Princess Eugenie in his One Show chat.

"Maybe," she chuckled. "No, I knew. I knew."

That slightly awkward moment aside, Princess Eugenie and Jack concurred that it had been quite a task keeping their engagement a secret until the palace was ready for a formal announcement.

"We literally told just our mother and fathers, brothers and sisters, and my grandparents [before today]," she revealed. "[I've been wearing the ring] less than 24 hours."

Asked how the Queen reacted, Princess Eugenie said: "Granny actually knew right at the beginning. She's one of the very few people we told. We left her this weekend, and had a very lovely time and she's very happy, as was my grandfather."

"She was incredibly happy and wished us well," Jack agreed.

Princess Eugenie and her fiancé will be marrying this autumn at St George's Chapel in Windsor, where Harry and Meghan will be getting hitched in May.

The One Show continues on Tuesday (January 23) at 7pm on BBC One.
