The One Show's Alex Jones has shared an emotional on-screen goodbye with her co-host Matt Baker as the duo hosted their final show together ahead of Alex's maternity leave.

The presenter confirmed the happy news that she was expecting baby number two live on the chat show in December, and Matt confirmed today (April 25) that tonight's episode was their last together "for quite some time".

"I know, it's weird isn't it?" Alex replied. "It does feel weird."

But while Alex assured Matt she'll be watching the show from home and sending in photos, she also added that it won't be long before she's back on the sofa presenting alongside him either.

"It's going to be odd, yes, but it'll be quick," she told Matt. "I'll be back in the autumn. Keep the seat warm!"

"It goes without saying, I'll miss you," Matt replied, which prompted Alex to add: "Oh don't, I'm going to cry!"

Alex will be back for her final episode before taking maternity leave tomorrow, but as Matt doesn't usually host the show on Fridays, she bid her goodbyes to her usual co-host tonight.

She also marked the moment on her Instagram, writing: "And that's my penultimate show before the bubba done, my last one with Matthew.

"It feels so weird to be saying goodbye, but it's only temporary, the Autumn will come round soon enough. I'll miss the team and lovely viewers but I'm looking forward to being just mama for a little while."

Alex is already mum to baby Teddy, who she welcomed with husband Charlie Thomson in January 2017, and she's previously admitted that she thinks she went back to hosting The One Show too early after having her son.

"Before you have a baby you don't really understand how it's going to change you," Alex explained last year.

"I made promises that were sort of unrealistic [...] In hindsight, five and a half months would have been better. But you don't know before going off on maternity."

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
