The biggest moment of the 2017 Oscars came when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced ‘La La Land’ as the Best Picture winner when the actual winner was ‘Moonlight’. It’s since emerged that Beatty was actually holding the envelope for Best Actress which announced ‘La La Land’s Emma Stone as the winner, so you can understand the confusion from the presenters.

But how did the announcement for the biggest award of the night go so horribly wrong? Some people on Twitter are suggesting that it’s all Leonardo DiCaprio’s fault.

DiCaprio was pictured holding the distinctive red “Best Actress” envelope while Emma Stone gave her speech, leading us to believe he may have somehow put it down backstage where Beatty and Dunaway picked it up before going on stage

Watching the moment back you can see Beatty’s confusion as he looks around to make sure he has the right envelope before passing it to Dunaway for help (or throw her under the bus, depending on which way you look at it).

As the chaos unfolded at the show though, Emma Stone took to the press room to deny rumours her red envelope had gone missing saying she’d had hold of it the whole time since her win.

According to a number of reports there are actually TWO envelopes with the winner’s names inside backstage, so it may actually have been the security personnel who handed Beatty and Dunaway the wrong envelope.

A report on USA Today says: The accountant from PriceWaterhouseCoopers jumps up and says, “He (presenter Warren Beatty) took the wrong envelope!” and goes running onstage. Craziness breaks out. No one knows how Beatty got a best actress envelope; Stone later tells reporters in the media room that she has been holding her envelope the entire time.

“Oh, my God. Moonlight won, Moonlight won,” a stagehand says, her hands on her head.

Fair play to Warren, after realising his mistake he sought out ‘Moonlight’ director Barry Jenkins to set things straight. In the press room Jenkins said “No explanation. Things just happen, you know. I will say, I saw two cards and so… things just happen. I wanted to see the card, to see the card, and Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. He came upstairs and he walked over to me and he showed me the card. Everybody was asking, ‘Can I see the card?’ and he was like, ‘No, Barry Jenkins has to see the card, I need him to know.”
