Otter Hangs 10 After Commandeering Surfboard in Santa Cruz

A cheeky sea otter commandeered a surfboard during Black Surf Santa Cruz’s third-annual Liberation Paddle Out event on June 18 at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz, California.

Mark Woodward, who goes by the moniker @NativeSantaCruz on Twitter, told Storyful he was watching the Juneteenth-weekend paddle-out when he noticed the sea otter checking out some surfboards.

He told Storyful it was “climbing onto a couple of them,” and eventually “went to a blue board and decided that was the one it liked and rode a wave.”

The video shows the otter on one end of a blue surfboard as a surfer hangs onto the other end. Woodward provided additional photos showing the otter checking out other surfboards and catching a wave all by itself. Credit: @NativeSantaCruz via Storyful
