OVERNIGHT closures on a busy Glasgow motorway have been extended.

We previously reported that the westbound M8 between junctions 18 (Charing X) and 16 (Craighall) would be closed from June 23 to August 2 from 10pm to 6am each night excluding Friday and Saturday.

Now, Amey, which is carrying out the works on behalf of Transport Scotland, said the closures are being extended by one week and will finish on Friday, August 9 at 6am.

It is understood that essential maintenance is being carried out on these sections of the motorway in multiple phases throughout 2024.

The most recent closures have been put in place to facilitate phase two which is being carried out on the Woodside Viaduct junctions 16 to 17.

Drivers are being advised that work will only be carried out using overnight closures with signed diversion routes.

Emergency service access will not be maintained during this period.

What are the diversion routes?

Westbound traffic will be taken off at junction 16 (Craighall) onto westbound Dobbie’s Loan for southbound Garscube Road.

From here, traffic will travel westbound onto West Graham Street onto junction 17.

The junction 15 loop on-slip from the A803 southbound is also closed.

Traffic will be diverted via Castle Street onto Cathedral Street then onto Hanover Street for Cowcaddens Road where it will join the mainline diversion at Cowcaddens X.

Commuters are being warned to allow for extra time to travel.

Additionally, vehicles entering the LEZ as part of the diversion are advised that they must follow the diversion signage at all times.

Amey states that any vehicles which don’t follow the published diversion route may be issued with penalty charge notice(s) from Glasgow City Council should they be captured outside the agreed route.
