Permutations which would see Hull City secure play-off place at West Brom's expense

It's shaping up to be quite the final day in the Championship on Saturday afternoon, and for Hull City., it may yet go down as one of the most memorable on record.

City's point in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Ipswich Town under the MKM Stadium lights at the weekend coupled with West Brom's 3-0 thrashing at Sheffield Wednesday, means the Tigers go into the final showdown in touching distance of the out of form Baggies.

Liam Rosenior's side have battled hard to create an opportunity for themselves and they know what they must do at Home Park in front of what will be a sold-out and enthusiastic away following in Devon.

IF HULL CITY BEAT PLYMOUTH . . .

Having already guaranteed seventh place, a 12th away win of the campaign would see seventh become sixth if Preston North End win at West Brom. City need a favour from Ryan Lowe's men at The Hawthorns, though neither team are in great form. Norwich's goal difference means there would need to be a substantial eight goal swing in City's favour which is unrealistic, so it's all on what happens with West Brom.

Three points for the Tigers would see them finish on 73 which is a fair achievement given they ended the last campaign on 58 and down in 15th place. Ultimately, the maths are straightforward. For City to finish sixth, they must beat Plymouth and hope Preston win at Albion.

Of course, if City were to win 5-0 at Home Park and Norwich lose 3-0 (or more) at Birmingham City then it would be the Canaries in trouble, however, we can probably just about rule that sequence of events out with the caveat that this is the Championship and almost nothing is ever off the table.

SHOULD THE TIGERS DRAW...

If Rosenior's men collect a 14th draw their play-off hopes are over. Only three points would see them overthrow Albion so a point is of no use.

While a point is useless for the Tigers, it might not be for Plymouth who would survive and avoid relegation, provided Birmingham City did not beat Norwich City at St Andrew's.

WHAT DOES DEFEAT MEAN?

City's campaign ends with a 14th loss and a long, long way back for the 1,700 or so away supporters that made the long trek down to Devon. It would also be a sad end to what's been a really exciting and positive season. On the flip side, while those away fans would be annoyed, the home fans would be ecstatic given it would assure the Pilgrims of Championship football next season.

Ipswich's 2-1 win at Coventry on Tuesday night does mean, however, that whatever happens at Home Park and elsewhere around the country, City can no longer finish any lower than seventh in the Championship table.
