Person airlifted to hospital after A66 crash leaves traffic 'at a standstill'

A person has been airlifted to hospital after a crash on the A66.

Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway following a collision near Stainmore on Tuesday, which is believed to have been between two vehicles.

Police closed the road in both directions sparking "heavy traffic" nearby, with some motorists reporting that they had been "stood still since about 9.45am."

The Great North Air Ambulance Service attended the incident, sending a paramedic and doctor on board an aircraft and arriving at 10am.

One person was airlifted to hospital after being assessed and treated by ambulance crews - and their current condition remains unknown.

A Great North Air Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Our critical care team was activated at 9.50am to reports of a road traffic collision on the A66 near Stainmore.

"We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 10am.

"Our team worked alongside the North West Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient before airlifting the patient to hospital."
