Person dies on Devon train tracks

A person has died on train tracks in Devon. today (June 21). Emergency services were called to the scene in Plympton, Plymouth around 7am following reports of a person on the tracks.

British Transport Police, alongside paramedics from the South Western Ambulance Service, attended the scene. Despite their efforts, the individual was declared deceased at the scene, a spokesperson for the transport police confirmed. Investigations are underway to determine what led to the death.

A spokesperson for the BTP stated: "Officers were called to the line near Plympton at 7am this morning (21 June) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to their death."

Rail travel has been significantly disrupted, with trains between Plymouth and Totnes canceled or delays throughout the morning while the emergency teams worked at the site. National Rail anticipates disruptions will persist until approximately 1pm, reports Plymouth Live.

Services to Plymouth and Totnes have been suspended, with some long-distance trains potentially terminating at Exeter or Newton Abbot. The closure of the railway line affects several routes:

National Rail announced: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Plymouth and Totnes meaning all lines are closed. As a result, trains between Plymouth and Newton Abbot may be cancelled. Plymouth and Totnes will not be served. Disruption is expected until 13:00."
