Peter Andre has opened up about his mental health struggles as he revealed he had a 'horrific breakdown' in the 90s.

The singer and TV presenter, who recently became a father again, spoke about his severe breakdown in the 90s and how it took him until his 40s to truly recover.

Writing for his exclusive column for OK! Magazine, Peter said: "It really does feel important to talk about it. I had a breakdown when I shot to fame in the 90s, and back then, it was a very taboo subject to talk about people would just think you're 'cuckoo'."

He continued: "So now, I'm so proud that we're in a time where for all the other things that are going wrong in our world, one of the things that's going right is that people are able to talk and bring things to the forefront, some even using social media as a way to express themselves.."

The 51-year-old, who recently welcomed baby Arabella with wife Emily Andre, shared: "My breakdown lasted a long time. It was only when I got to my forties that I truly started to come through it. I think I was lost I was getting better, then my brother Andrew passed away and that triggered a lot of things but the best thing is, there's a lot of help out there now."

He concluded by saying: "I think it's really important to celebrate mental health, and no matter whether you're cured or not cured, it's important to remember that it can reappear any time, but there are so many support options out there."

Peter has previously spoken about the tumultuous events that led to his downfall at the height of his music career.

He revealed that he spent six years in and out of psychiatric units from the age of 25, caught up in a "blur of nightclubs and groupies and a lot of casual sex".

The star also confessed that his shirtless posing and "arrogance" were merely a cover for his insecurities - it was all about seeking validation and acceptance.

In an interview with The Times last year, Peter, who still experiences brain fog and panic attacks, admitted: "It was an insecurity thing, trying to prove a point because of the years that you weren't accepted. I don't like who I became when I was just going with girls and not caring. I just went off on a tangent."

Peter has also shared how his anxiety resurfaced with a vengeance following the tragic death of his older brother, Andrew, from kidney cancer in 2012.

"It was even worse than it was in my 20s, but a lot of that was triggered by my grief. Saying that, I want to stress that mental health struggles are beatable."
