A North East street has been placed under a large police cordon following a 'stabbing' last night that left one man dead and saw another arrested on suspicion of murder.

The area surrounding Wrensfield Road in Stockton was swarmed by police last night just before 6.40pm (June 26) following a 'stabbing' that left a 23-year-old man dead.

Another man, aged 28, was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Pictures from last night show officers and CSI investigators at the scene late into the night taking photographs of the area as residents described commotion.

One neighbour heard "shouting" and the street was soon "full of police and the ambulance took the lad to hospital and the police taped all the road off".

A full statement by Cleveland Police reads: "A 23-year-old man has died following an incident in Stockton yesterday evening, Wednesday 26 June 2024.

"The incident happened in Wrensfield Road shortly before 6.40pm, when the victim was stabbed by another man. The 23-year-old victim was taken to hospital, where he sadly died a short time later.

"A 28-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident and he is being held in custody on suspicion of murder. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

"Police will remain at the scene and in the surrounding area for some time while the full circumstances of the incident are established.

"We thank local residents for their patience and co-operation. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Cleveland Police by dialling 101 and quoting reference number SE24120393."
