Piers Morgan has claimed he was actually “greeted like One Direction” at the National Television Awards despite reports of boos.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter was nominated in the TV Interviews category for his TalkTV show Piers Morgan Uncensored, but was beaten by Graham Norton.

During the event this week, mixed boos and cheers could be heard as ceremony host Joel Dommett introduced the star to the audience.

Morgan initially appeared to acknowledge that he didn't get the best reaction, but he's now said that watching it back revealed a bit of a different story.

Tweeting after the awards, Morgan said he'd been booed, talked about getting beaten by Norton and also appeared to take aim at Dommett.

“Got the Tube in searing heat.. got mocked by a host I’ve never heard of… got booed by an audience of shrieking banshees… got beaten by Graham bloody Norton.. and now getting the first limo I can find to get the hell outta here,” he wrote on Twitter.

But the star, 58, seemed to have a slightly different take after watching the show himself.

“Hadn’t realised until I watched the NTAs back that far from being booed as some click-baiting wastrels have claimed, I was basically greeted like One Direction last night,” he tweeted, as he shared a clip showing him being cheered at the show.

Fans were tickled by Morgan’s post, with some calling the TV star “a legend”.

Some agreed that the jeering wasn’t that bad, with one fan telling the presenter: “Exactly what we are trying to tell you!

"Hardly any booing.”

However, another teased: “In your dreams.”

“I like you but, sorry, no comparison to 1D,” said someone else.
