Despite their ongoing spats, Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan has come to the defence of The Apprentice's Lord Alan Sugar over the latter's racially-insensitive tweet.

Sugar faced a massive backlash yesterday (June 20) after tweeting a picture of the Senegal football team and compared them to "the guys from the beach in Marbella".

He deleted it and later apologised, though the damage was already done with many calling it 'racist' and 'vile'.

However, one unlikely person coming to his defence was Morgan – despite the pair's infamous reputation for trading barbs on Twitter.

"I've known @Lord_Sugar for 25 years," the GMB presenter tweeted. "He can be a halfwit of biblical proportions, and prone to terrible 'jokes' as we saw today. But he's not a racist."

After initially sending the tweet, Sugar insisted that it was "funny" and quote tweeted many people sharing a screenshot of it.

However, in the end he eventually apologised, tweeting: "I misjudged me earlier tweet. It was in no way intended to cause offence, and clearly my attempt at humour has backfired. I have deleted the tweet and am very sorry."

The BBC also issued a statement regarding the controversy, writing: "Lord Sugar has acknowledged this was a seriously misjudged tweet, and he's in no doubt about our view on this. It's right he's apologised unreservedly."
