It has now been over two years since plans were lodged to build more than 100 flats on a former school site. But a decision on the proposed development - for 117 homes on the old Brookhouse Green Primary School site, off Wellfield Road, in Bentilee - has yet to be made.

Despite this, Stoke-on-Trent City Council remains confident the regeneration scheme will soon be rubber-stamped and says the development could even be finished by late 2026.

A council spokesman said: “In December, cabinet agreed to a proposal which enables the formal change of use of the land on Wellfield Road from educational purposes to housing. Subject to planning approval, the site will provide 117 new, high-quality affordable homes and apartments for residents of the city with an anticipated completion date of late 2026."

StokeonTrentLive reported back in March 2022 that a planning application had been submitted to transform the overgrown 5.4-acre site into a mixture of properties for the over-55s and families. It would include 53 supported living apartments, 50 flats and four bungalows, all likely to be for rent and allocated through the city council’s housing register. Ten three-bedroom houses would also be built for shared ownership or first-time buyers to help people get onto the property ladder.

Brookhouse Green Primary School closed in 2004 when it merged with Bentilee Primary School to form what is now known as Maple Court Academy.
