Sheffield is set to get a new food, drink and entertainment venue unlike any other - if plans are given the go-ahead.

A planning application has been submitted to Sheffield City Council for the eye-catching Thor’s Tipi which would be built on an empty plot on Pinstone Street.

The plot, which also has boundaries with Furnival Gate and Union Street, was formerly the side of Mid City House office block which was demolished earlier this year.

At the time, there were no plans for what would replace the iconic Sheffield building. Now that the site has been cleared, the planning application for the temporary tipi structure has been submitted on behalf of Fabler & Co. Ltd.

It would be the second Thor’s Tipi to arrive in Yorkshire, with one site already located in the grounds of the Principal Hotel in York.

The application explains that the venue would offer live music, as well as serving food and drink and would be open to the public 364 days a year - closing only for Christmas Day - from 11am to 11pm.

The venue would consist of a single-storey building, with ‘scaffold board-style timber cladding’ and PVC roll-up windows, above part of which a tipi structure would rise.

There would also be outdoor seating, set around planters, and the site would be surrounded by timber fencing.

The planning application also details the types of events the venue would offer, including open mic nights, a monthly street food market and quizzes - all of which would adhere to Thor’s “noise management plan” which has been designed to reduce the impact of noise on surrounding businesses and residents.

If successful, Fabler & Co. Ltd hope that the venue would be open to the public from August or September 2024.

The planning application concludes: “We will of course work with the relevant authorities to ensure our venue has a positive impact on Sheffield City Centre, as both responsible operators and innovators on the high-street.”
