Police dashcam shows 62-year old driving over 145mph

Footage released by Hampshire Police shows the moment a driver was caught speeding on the M3 motorway near Basingstoke – at a staggering 147mph.

PC Jamie Foster, who was driving an unmarked car, pulled the driver over after recording him doing an average speed of 147.1mph. The offending driver was 62-year-old John Hornby, of Ringwood, Hampshire, who pushed his powerful Audi S4 remarkably close to its top speed of 155mph.

Hornby pleaded guilty to the offence and was prosecuted in his absence for the incident, which took place on June 13, 2017.

Paul Matcham, prosecuting, told the court that Hornby's was "among the highest speeds" that he has ever prosecuted.

PC Foster, from the Joint Roads Policing Unit, said: "We see a lot of things in this job but even I was shocked to see someone driving at such high speeds. You can see from the footage just how dangerous it was.

"He was not only risking his own life but the lives of other innocent road users and that is unacceptable. It is sheer luck that Hornby's driving that day did not cause a collision, because if it had the consequences at that speed would have undoubtedly been fatal.

"There is absolutely no excuse for such reckless and totally irresponsible driving and we will take action against those who put lives at risk."

Hornby was disqualified from driving for nine months, fined £325 and ordered to pay £117 in costs.
