Police have issued an update after a car ploughed into a group of people outside a polling station during last week's local elections. Shocking footage captured the moment a red Volkswagen Golf appeared to be driven at a number of people on the corner of Dean Street and Portland Street North, in Ashton-under-Lyne, at 4.30pm last Thursday (May 2).

The incident took place outside the Holy Trinity Community Centre, where residents were placing their votes in the local election. A 43-year-old woman was taken to hospital with 'superficial' injuries following the incident.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed last Friday that an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted section 18 assault, while a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit section 18. In an update issued today (May 10), the force said both suspects had since been bailed pending further enquiries.

The footage appeared to show a man speaking to the driver of the Golf through the window before multiple other people, including a woman, walked towards the car. The driver then quickly drove towards the group, with multiple people getting knocked to the ground.

Police stated that the car 'collided with the victim and failed to stop'.
