Police have confirmed no action is being taken against a trucker who smashed into a railway bridge. The crash on Longton's Anchor Road, which saw a lorry the truck was carrying topple off and seemingly strike a van, resulted in the route being shut for several hours.

Officers, firefighters and Network Rail engineers were all sent to the scene on Monday morning. StokeonTrentLive reported how trains could not pass over the bridge for an hour as the structure was inspected.

Network Rail had said such incidents are 'completely avoidable' - with that Longton collision not the first in the Potteries involving a truck and a bridge. The alarm had been raised at around 10am on July 1 with the road back open at roughly 7.20pm.

Today Staffordshire Police have confirmed the trucker won't face any punishment.

A spokeswoman told StokeonTrentLive: "We won’t be taking any action against the driver."
