A Met Police officer also mown down by Khalid Masood in the terror attack on London is believed to have “life-changing injuries”.

Police Constable Kris Aves, 35, was walking along Westminster Bridge with two colleagues after a commendation ceremony when they were struck.

Pc Aves, a father, underwent eight hours of emergency surgery.

His sister, Nikki Tapener, 42, said: “He has been hurt but his life is not in danger.”

In a statement, Mr Aves's family said: "Kris went to work on Wednesday full of pride as he was receiving a commendation for his exceptional work as a police liaison officer during a demonstration in 2016.

"What started as a celebratory day, ended in tragedy.

"Kris is now being treated in hospital, and as a family we remain at his bedside.

"We thank his colleagues and the public who have sent us messages of support."

Colleague Pc Roger Smith, in his early 50s, was also operated on for leg injuries, while Pc Bradley Bryant was discharged after suffering minor injuries.
