Police have released the first image of the baby girl found abandoned in an east London playground.

The newborn was found by a woman walking her dog with her children at about 10.15pm last night (Thursday), after they were alerted by her cries.

The baby was wrapped in a towel in a shopping bag at the Roman Road play park, near the junction with Saxon Road.

The child, who is being referred to as ‘Roman’ by hospital staff, had been placed on the floor next to a park bench.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and the infant was taken to an east London hospital where she is being cared for. Her condition is described as stable.

Officers are now appealing for the mother of the child to come forward.

Inspector Shane Clarke of North East Command Unit, said: “We are growing increasingly concerned for your welfare and I urge you to make contact either with police, your local hospital or GP surgery. It is really important that we know that you are safe.

“I would also urge anyone who has information that could help us to reunite this baby with her mother to come forward.”

Anyone with information regarding the mother’s whereabouts is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference CAD7825/31JAN or Tweet @MetCC.
