There is no wider risk to the public after a heavy police presence in the city on Monday following a knife incident, police have said.

Officers rushed to Lawn Road before 2pm on Monday afternoon after they were alerted to a man seen with the sharp object.

The road – and its junction with Belmont Road and Osborne Road South in Portswood – was cordoned off for several hours.

The man was apprehended by police before being taken to hospital.

Two days since the incident, Hampshire Constabulary said: “We would like to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public in relation to this incident.”

No arrests have been made.

The man sustained an injury and was taken to hospital for treatment on Monday.

The extent of his injuries is not known.

Many people spoke of their shock as the incident unfolded.

One woman, who has lived in Osborne Road South for 28 years, said: “I heard the commotion from all the way down the road.

"I heard all the sirens but I don’t know what’s happened, there were men shouting.

"An air ambulance helicopter tried to land and there were lots of police. This is uncommon in this area, I don’t see this many police officers here or this big of a presence."

A man, who has lived in the area for a couple of years, said: "It’s quite scary really to think something has happened near where you live.

"Hopefully we will find out what’s happened soon."
