Poundland to close store next week after failing to agree lease - here's where

Poundland will close its store in Middlesbrough’s council-owned Cleveland Centre after being “unable to agree lease terms”.

The discounter’s store in the town centre shopping mall will close on Saturday, May 18.

Its nearby store in the Captain Cook Square in the town will not be affected, and it will attempt to find new roles for affected staff.

It comes as the brand, famous for selling items for £1, said it had been “unable to agree lease terms that would enable us to keep the store trading” with the Cleveland Centre, owned by Middlesbrough Council.

A spokesperson for the discounter said: “Sadly we’ve been unable to agree lease terms that would enable us to keep the store trading and we’re consolidating into our other nearby store in Middlesbrough’s centre.

“Whenever we have to close a store, it goes without saying we do all we can to find alternative roles for colleagues.”

Middlesbrough Council did not comment.

The council stepped in to save the shopping mall in January 2022, buying it for just £12m – a fraction of the £85m reportedly paid for it by the previous owners just five years earlier.

Poundland recently stepped in take on 71 Wilko locations after the famous brand fell into administration last year. Since, it has closed nine of those stores.
