Prestwick artists Debbie Campbell and Scott Nicol have reached the finals of a major radio contest which saw them take to the big stage in Glasgow.

Go Radio has partnered with the charity Glasgow Life to run 'A Song for Glasgow' competition. The contest has allowed musicians like Debbie and Scott to enter their own original tracks dedicated to the city.

The duo, with their song 'Under A Glasgow Sky,' written by Debbie's husband Robert Neil, made the top ten tracks last month and after a public vote made it to the top five.

Debbie and Scott performed at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in front of a judging panel and guests. After much deliberation, the judges chose another finalist Jamie Campbell with his song ‘Glasgow’ as the winner.

Despite not winning the competition, Debbie said it was an "unforgettable experience".

Debbie, 53, said: "It was such an exciting time. We got talking to all the other finalists and we now are all friends. We were all well looked after by representatives from both Go Radio and Glasgow Life.

"Myself and Scott were up first, so we gave it our best shot and set the standard for the rest. It was quite nerve wracking but also very exciting.

"We weren't allowed to see the acts on stage so we sat in the Green Room till they were all finished. There were invited guests and we got to mingle with them when the judges were deliberating, then everyone went back in to await the verdict.

"To say my stomach was doing somersaults would be putting it mildly! Sadly we didn't win but it was an amazing experience and at least a 'Campbell' won!"

She added: "We came home with our heads held high. We did Ayrshire proud.

"The highlight for me was performing our original song, Under A Glasgow Sky, in front of the judges, and thinking how far I have come since being turned down from the Primary School Choir due to my shyness, and singing the fantastic lyrics penned by my other half, Robert Neil."

Debbie started singing when she was 23 and five years later joined the Ayr Amateur Opera Company. She is now a lead singer with the covers band, The Splinters, and two acoustic acts, Burness and The Cactus Wrens.

Debbie released her first debut album 'About Time' last October, which is now available on all streaming platforms. The album shares an important message that "it is never too late too follow your dreams".

Scott has been performing much longer than Debbie, and has numerous albums under his belt. He runs his own business, Possibility Screams, helping the young talent of today with guitar lessons, songwriting and stage performance.

The duo got together to create a song dedicated to Glasgow as the city holds a special place in their hearts. Now the competition is over, Debbie and Scott are set to play their song at Prestfest this August.
