The criminal underworld better watch its back, because Frank Castle is officially locked and re-loaded for a second season of The Punisher.

Netflix confirmed the news earlier today (December 12) on Twitter, announcing that season two of the Marvel series "is coming" to the service soon. And very soon, we hope.

After all, it looks as though time might be running out for Marvel and Netflix as Disney recently announced its plans to turn their attention to "the television platform".

But following a pretty positive reception from both critics and fans alike, it seems as though Netflix has managed to stay Disney's plans with a second season.

For now, anyway.

Which is just as well, because The Punisher's showrunner Steve Lightfoot has already been dropping a few hints about what's in store for Frank Castle in season two – or rather who.

Although Lightfoot might claim he's 'not even thought' about a second outing, his ideas for the show's next villain sound pretty well-formed to us.

"[O]ne of the villains I love is Barracuda [from Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX series]. I think he's great fun," he told The Hollywood Reporter last month.

"I also really like O'Brien [also introduced in Punisher MAX]. I thought she was always really cool," he added, before admitting choosing a villain was "a very fun sandbox to play in."

The Punisher is available to stream on Netflix now.
