Race Across The World's Alfie emotional over late mum in new episode
Warning spoilers for Race Across The World episode three
What is going to happen?
Race Across The Worl's Alfie is visibly overcome with emotional as he shares his heartache over losing his mum for the first time on the race in a spoiler for Wednesday's upcoming episode.
The contestant has taken on the trek with his best friend Owen and they have been in a good position in the race so far – placing second in both legs. Tensions are rising now as one team will be eliminated from the race in Wednesday's episode.
The best friends have been pushing themselves throughout the race so far but this week they take some time to slow down – just as one team faces elimination. Emotional scenes give us the opportunity to see a new side to Alfie as he really open up about his late mum for the first time on the show while in Hoi An, Vietnam.
What, how and why?
Special moments in the race capture Alfie reflecting on how he would love to see his late mum again. In a moment that will tug the heartstrings of the viewers at home, he says: "I just kind of want that sensation of seeing her again."
The contestant lost his mum and at the time he was only five years old. While he has talked about living with his grandmother, this is the first time Alfie really opens up about mum's passing in the show so far. In a piece to camera where he is on his own, the contestant says: "So I was five when my mum passed away."
It then cuts to moving scenes where Alfie is in a boat with Owen and he is lighting a floating lantern and setting it free. In a reflective moment, a few tears are shed as the star reveals he is overcome with emotion thinking about his mum and he shares his one wish.
He says: "This is the first opportunity I've had on the race to think about my mum. I'm just inundated with emotions I've genuinely not felt since I was a little kid. I just kind of want that sensation of seeing her again." See how the moment unfolds in Wednesday's episode.
Alfie has already opened up to the audience at home about his close bond with his grandmother and how he has lived with her. The youngster also opened up about having to work nightshifts while he was at school to help support them.
What is happening in Race Across The World?
In the latest episode, the five teams enter Southeast Asia for the first time. From the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, they must trek 2,000km through Vietnam as they head for into Cambodia.
Looking at the journey as a whole, Race Across The World takes the teams 15,000km from Japan to Lombok but not all the groups will make the finish line. In Wednesday's episode, the last pairing to the checkpoint in Phnom Penh will be eliminated from the BBC competition.
There is £20,000 at stake as the first team to cross the finish line in Lombok will receive the cash prize. With only £1400 and no phones, the teams must make the trek. Along the way, they must make decisions that will make or break their journey. They may need to rely on a stranger's kindness or work for money, they may need to speed ahead in the race but the contestants also need to take time out to relax and see the sights. It's a balancing act.
Watch Race Across The World at 9pm on BBC1.
