Reese Witherspoon "wouldn't say never" to running for office

In the run-up to the US presidential election, it's a time when conversation often turns to politics, and some people are left wondering whether they could do a better job than those in power.

It's a topic that was discussed on the Smartless podcast, hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, when Reese Witherspoon appeared as a guest.

The actors began discussing politics, when Big Little Lies star Reese asked the co-hosts if they'd ever consider running for office themselves.

The question was turned back around on Reese, with the suggestion that her "intelligence, charm, and likeability" would stand her in good stead if she ever opted to have her name on a ballot paper.

Jason told Reese he believes she'd “get a lot of the vote” if she ran for office, to which she joked: “Yeah, I mean our standards have become very low in this country.”

The actor and producer went on to say that she wouldn’t rule out a career in politics, explaining that she doesn’t know “where I’m going to be” in the future.

“I wouldn't say never, because I don't know where I'm going to be when I'm, you know, 65," she said.

Reese went on to explain her short-time hopes for the state of politics.

"I think we need better representation and balance. Women are 50% of the population, but we're not 50% of the representation in government, which is bizarre, particularly when they're adjudicating over our bodies.

“And the lack of representation of people of colour, who make up a large, almost majority of this country. What about balance, you know? Just yin and yang. Male, female balance."
