This remarkable poll of 37 countries shows just what the rest of the world thinks of Donald Trump

If Donald Trump thought his approval rating at home was poor, he might not want to look at what the rest of the world thinks of him.

A huge international survey has revealed that dozens of countries have little confidence in the US president.

The Pew Research Center interviewed more than 40,000 people in 37 countries for its study, and found that Mr Trump and his policies are ‘broadly unpopular around the globe’.

Of the 37 countries, only two – Russia and Israel – have more confidence in Mr Trump than they did in his predecessor, Barack Obama.

Only 22% of those polled have faith in Mr Trump to do the right thing when it comes to international affairs, compared to 64% for Mr Obama in the final years of his presidency.

In the US, Mr Trump’s approval rating has been hovering just below the 40% mark in recent days.

‘Although he has only been in office a few months, Donald Trump’s presidency has had a major impact on how the world sees the United States,’ said Pew.

‘Trump and many of his key policies are broadly unpopular around the globe, and ratings for the Usshave declined steeply in many nations.’

The research said 64% of people in the 37 nations had a favourable view of the US at the end of Mr Obama’s time in the White House, but that has dropped to 49% under Mr Trump.

‘The prevailing view among the 37 countries surveyed is that their country’s relationship with the US will be unchanged over the next few years,’ said Pew.

‘Among those who do anticipate a change, however, more predict relations will worsen, rather than improve.’

Some of the biggest shifts in attitudes towards the US have come in Europe. Sweden has seen the biggest drop – 93% had confidence in Mr Obama, with just 10% having the same faith in Mr Trump.

The UK falls in line with the global average when it comes to confidence in Mr Trump – just 22% – a sharp decrease from the 79% who backed Mr Obama at the end of his time in the Oval Office.

Pew said the negativity towards Mr Trump is a reaction to both his policies and his character.

His intention to build a wall along the US-Mexico border, his withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and his Muslim travel ban were all factors in the results.

But those polled were also turned off by Mr Trump’s personality.

‘Trump’s character is also a factor in how he is viewed abroad,’ said Pew. ‘In the eyes of most people surveyed around the world, the White House’s new occupant is arrogant, intolerant and even dangerous.

‘Among the positive characteristics tested, his highest rating is for being a strong leader. Fewer believe he is charismatic, well-qualified or cares about ordinary people.’

Of those polled, 75% said they thought Mr Trump was ‘arrogant’, 65% said he was ‘intolerant’ and 62% said he was ‘dangerous’.

Mr Trump also scored badly against other world leaders, with his 22% confidence rating below Russia’s Vladimir Putin (27%), China’s Xi Jinping (28%) and Germany’s Angela Merkel (42%).

However, there was some good news for the American people, in that they remain relatively popular despite their leader.

Across the 37 nations polled, an average of 58% said they have a favourable opinion of Americans.
