Mould and mildew can be a common problem in many homes, particularly on window frames and in showers. However, a cheap kitchen condiment could be the solution to this issue.

With the rainy weather, moisture can seep into your home through cracks around your windows. When warm, moist air comes into contact with a cold surface, mould spores can develop within 24 hours and spread throughout the home in the next 18-21 days.

A study by Utilita Energy found that 24% of adults have discovered mould in their home at some point. Shower mould is also a frequent issue as it's more likely to grow in damp and humid areas, like the bathroom. If left untreated, damp homes may also start to grow mildew.

Mildew, a form of fungus, can be identified by its grey, white or light brown appearance. It can quickly ruin fabrics and leave properties with a distinct, unpleasant odour, reports the Express. It can also harm inhabitants by causing allergic reactions and respiratory issues.

However, using white wine vinegar, which can be bought cheaply in almost all supermarkets, can help remove the unsightly mould and mildew. To use, pour enough undiluted white vinegar into an empty spray bottle to cover the area of mould growth.

Spray the mould directly, fully saturating it with the vinegar, and allow the vinegar to sit for at least one hour. Then, using a soft bristle brush, scrub the mouldy surface until the mould is gone. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried.
