The Star Wars franchise has done much better in terms of representation in recent years, but behind the camera it's still a bit lacking.

All of the mainline entries (from George Lucas all the way to Episode IX's JJ Abrams) have been directed by white men, as well as spin-off stories Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo origin movie.

(Side-note: Colin Trevorrow, who was originally lined up to direct Episode IX, is also a white man.)

Surely we're at the point now where we should be considering more diverse directors?

Rian Johnson – one of the aforementioned white men and director of The Last Jedi – appears to agree.

Asked about it at a press conference, he said he would more than welcome a woman or person of colour (or both!) to take charge.

"Hell yes, it's time," he said. "There are so many incredibly talented female directors, directors of colour out there, and so many that I would love to see play in this universe.

"So hell yes, please. I'd love it to happen."

Not that Rian has any reason to complain otherwise.

He recently revealed that Disney gave the go-ahead for him to write and direct a fourth Star Wars trilogy – despite not really knowing what the story was going to be at the time.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in cinemas today (December 14) in the UK and December 15 in the US.
