Who is Rishi Sunak's wife and do they have children?

With just 30 days until the General Election, the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the leader of the Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer go head-to-head tonight (Tuesday) in a televised debate. It's not the first time Rishi has taken part in such TV clashes.

The 44-year-old former chancellor was pitted against Liz Truss - then MP for South West Norfolk - on a series of debates to decide the Conservative Party leader. On that occasion, the 49-year-old former Liberal Democrat beat Rishi to the top job - only to become the UK's shortest-serving PM of all time.

Now, Rishi will be hoping he does better with the public. He will have a ream of detail to take to Sir Keir, and will be hoping to paint the Tories as the party of security with little tolerance for immigration and a well-thought-out plan for the future.

If he wins, it's five more years of Rishi in Number 10. So here's a little about his family.

Where is Rishi from?

Rishi was born in 1980 in Southampton to East African-born Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi descent, Yashvir and Usha Sunak. His father was born and raised in Kenya and was a GP.

His mother, Usha was born in Tanganyika - which later became part of Tanzania - was a pharmacist. Sunak is the eldest of three siblings - brother Sanjay is a psychologist and sister Raakhi Williams works in New York as chief of strategy and planning at Education Cannot Wait.

Where did Rishi go to school?

Rishi attended Stroud School, a preparatory school in Romsey, and later went to Winchester College. He studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University.

He was also a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University where he studied for his MBA. While at Stanford, he met his future wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of Indian billionaire NR Narayana Murthy.

Back in the UK, he worked in financial analysis and hedge fund management in the City of London until moving to politics in October 2014. He won the Richmond seat in Yorkshire and became a backbencher.

He later served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and then Chief Secretary to the Treasury, After serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer from February 2020 until July 2022, Rishi became Prime Minister in October 2022.

Is Rishi married?

Rishi married Akshata Narayana Murthy in 2009. The daughter of NR Narayana Murthy, the Murthy family has an estimated fortune of $4.1 billion, making Akshata's father the 711th richest person in the world according to Forbes.

Akshata was born in Karnataka, India in 1980. She was raised by her maternal grandparents while her father, along with her mother Sudha, worked to launch their technology company Infosys, one of India's Big Tech firms.

Akshata is a fashion designer, businesswoman and venture capitalist and, along with her brother Rohan, an heir to the Murthy fortune.

Does Rishi have children?

The couple has two young daughters, Krishna, who is to turn 13 this year and Anoushka, who will turn 11. It's been reported they attend Glendower Prep in South Kensington, London, where the annual fees are £22,350 per pupil.

The family's main home is Kirby Sigston Manor in the village of Kirby Sigston, North Yorkshire, as it's Rishi's constituency. They also own a mews house in Earl's Court in central London, a flat on the Old Brompton Road, South Kensington, and a penthouse apartment on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California.
