Rod Stewart rides to Rangers boss Philippe Clement’s rescue as he slams Ibrox stars and predicts Celtic problems

Sir Rod Stewart believes the Rangers players let Philippe Clement down against Dundee but isn't ruling them out of the title race.

The veteran rocker's beloved Celtic are firmly in the driving seat after watching their rivals drop five points against Ross County and the Dark Blues. Simply matching Rangers' results for the remainder of the season will see the Premiership trophy reside at Parkhead for the third year on the bounce.

But Stewart can see post-split problems on the horizon for the Hoops. They are still to face Hearts and Kilmarnock in their final five fixtures, with both sides having beaten twice already this season, the Jambos doing a home and away double in their last two encounters with the champions. And while Stewart hopes to be facing Steven Naismith's side in the Scottish Cup final next month, he's well aware of the damage they and Killie could yet do to his own team's championship dreams.

"I was stunned," he said of the game at Dens. "I watched the whole match and obviously wanted Rangers to come unstuck, but I never dreamt in a million years that they would. They looked very lethargic.

"Mind you, it's not ever yet. We've got to play Hearts, we've got to play Kilmarnock and they've caused us trouble. But I really didn't expect them to come unstuck.

"But it can all turn around. There's only three points in it. Goal difference is pretty good now but anything can happen. Hearts have given us problems and they will again. Hopefully they give Rangers problems on Sunday!"

Asked if he feared Clement was going to be the man to deliver the title to Ibrox, Stewart told talkSport: "I did, and I still think he's got it right. I hate to say it but I think the players have let him down somewhat. They looked tired and they lacked width. They don't seem to have any great wingers like Celtic do."

The final Old Firm clash of the season on May 11 could be decisive and Stewart feels the Hoops have their rivals' number going into that one. He added: "It would appear that way, especially as we've got them at Celtic Park and it will be a sell-out crowd with a pretty intimidating atmosphere. We went to Ibrox and I thought we were superb in the first half. Then Rangers were superb in the second half so again, it's not all over."
