Roseanne is coming back to our screens after 21 years.

And one of the characters confirmed for the epic revival of the '90s sitcom is Nancy Bartlett, who was played by Sandra Bernhard.

The American actress gave a rare interview today (February 20) on Good Morning Britain and admitted to presenters Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway that she didn't expect to be included in the highly-anticipated comeback.

She explained: "I didn't think I was going to get to be on this reboot because they were only doing eight episodes – but then they added a ninth and Roseanne said to me, 'Right, you're back as Nancy, what do you think she's been doing all these years?'"

Following that conversation, Sandra admitted she was screaming with excitement.

Nancy was the first openly lesbian recurring character on American television.

Opening up about how her character's sexuality was portrayed and why she was so popular with viewers, Sandra said: "Nancy was married to Arnie, who was played by Tom Arnold, and he drove her into the arms of [Maria, played by Morgan Fairchild].

"The great thing about Nancy was that it was done with such a great sense of humour. Roseanne and I got to collaborate on the idea of the character and you got used to a fun character who had sexual fluidity."

Sandra then went on to reveal that her character will not appear in the reboot until the very last episode of the new season.

However, when she does finally grace our screens, the star hinted that political issues surrounding the current US President Donald Trump will be addressed.

Sandra added: "Working class people move the world and sometimes we don't have enough empathy or understanding of what they go through."

The actress is currently in the UK as she is performing her new show Sandemonium at London's Ronnie Scott's this week – the first time she has taken to the stage in the UK for seven years.
