Ross Barkley's Chelsea debut on hold as he wasn't signed in time for Norwich tie

Ross Barkley won’t be able to make his debut for Chelsea in the FA Cup tomorrow night because he was signed too late.

Coach Antonio Conte had planned to name him on the bench for the replay against Norwich City at Stamford Bridge.

But Barkley completed his £15m switch from Everton after the deadline had passed for him to be eligible to play in the FA Cup Third Round.

The switch had to be completed by midday on Friday 5th of January, but it wasn’t announced until later in the afternoon.

And even though the game has gone to a replay following a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road, the rule still comes into effect.

When asked if the midfielder will make his first appearance for the club, Conte confirmed: “No, because he's not able to play because the transfer was late.

“We are preparing a friendly game for him during this week and then we will see his physical condition. But I'm very happy for his commitment and physical condition. He could be ready for the next game (away at Brighton) or for the next game (away at Arsenal).”

Conte also revealed that captain Gary Cahill is unavailable due to a minor muscular problem and Cesc Fabregas is also out with a hamstring injury.

The Chelsea coach has vowed to make a number of changes and revealed that Wales’ rising star Ethan Ampadu will start in defence.
