Runway Shut After Jumbo Jet Gets Stuck In Mud

A runway at one of the world's busiest airports was shut after a passenger jet overshot the tarmac and got stuck in the mud.

The KLM Boeing 747 from Nairobi to Amsterdam's Schiphol ended up with its front wheels lodged in the grass.

Photos from the scene showed bemused looking passengers leaving the aircraft before being taken to the terminal by bus.

No one was injured but the runway had to be closed for several hours.

Vincent Verweij, who was on board flight KL566, said the jet was not quite completely full and passengers were told there had been a problem with the brakes.

He told the De Telegraaf newspaper: "The plane slowed quite abruptly, but it was only when there was an announcement that we saw the landing had not gone well.

"There was no panic on board. We had to wait an hour before there were stairs and buses so we could get to the terminal. It was quite sensational."

KLM tweeted: "The KL566 coming from Nairobi came after a safe landing to a halt with it nose wheel next to the tarmac.

"All passengers were transported to the terminal with buses. The cause of this incident is under investigation."
