A shopkeeper in India has been blasted by animal rights campaigners after he filmed himself torturing a mouse.

Sadistic Melahalli Ramanna made a sickening video showing himself tying the rodent to a glass jar with string “to teach it a lesson” for stealing food off his shelves.

The 30-second clip, filmed at his shop in Mysore, southern India, shows Ramanna whipping the poor animal while his friends can be heard laughing and jeering in the background.

At one point, Ramanna hits the mouse so hard that the whole glass jar that it is tied to is knocked over.

As the tiny mouse whimpers, Ramanna repeatedly asks: “Will it eat gram flour and wheat again?”

Anthony Rubin, an animal welfare officer from Chennai, India, said: “This is truly a disturbing video. I do not know where the world is heading. How can a person torture an animal like that?
