A popular community hub in Grimsby has announced it will be closing its doors for the final time next month.

For many years, Welholme Works has provided local residents with a range of free weekly hobby and activity workshops, coffee mornings, music groups, police surgeries and activities for children during the school holidays.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, the centre - situated on Ladysmith Road - acted as a pick-up point for the Summer Reading Challenge whilst the libraries were closed, and ran the Grab Bag project to ensure service users could still take part in workshops from the comfort of their homes.

But in an emotional post to its Facebook page, Welholme Works announced it will be closing at the end of July due to "circumstances beyond [their] control".

The full post reads: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, it is with great sadness that Welholme Works have to announce we will be closing at the end of July. Whilst our key projects will be continuing on in other venues within Heneage, our time at the Centre is coming to an end.

"Please direct any questions or queries through direct message only please as we will not be holding a public dialogue on this post. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us, attended our sessions, or has been a part of anything we have done. We look forward to what the future brings, and again, thank everyone who supported us."

In response to the sad news, one person wrote: "This is a huge blow to the community."

"This is such a shame, it's so valuable to the community and businesses that run from there," wrote another.
