Saltley school placed on lockdown following hoax bomb threat

A school was placed under lockdown after receiving a hoax bomb threat today, Tuesday, July 2. Highfield Junior and Infants in Saltley received a call just before 8.35am saying a potential explosive had been placed within 500 metres of the premises.

Staff immediately placed the school under lockdown to protect children. Police investigated and confirmed it was a malicious hoax.

The school was due to reopen for pupils at 11am.

The school posted on its website: "At 8.34am on Tuesday, July 2, we received a recorded message via telephone that there was a potential bomb within 500 metres of the school. As a result of this information we acted swiftly, responsibly and in accordance with our lock down policy and procedure.

"The action taken by the school was in the best interests of pupil, community and staff safety. As a result of the police investigation, we can now confirm that this matter was a hoax, and I am pleased to report there was no harm to any of our pupils, staff and the wider community."

West Midlands Police has been contacted for comment.
