Sam Fender shares update on third album: ‘We need to get it right’

Sam Fender has shared an update on his latest album, while admitting he feels like he “rushed” to release second album Seventeen Going Under.

The Newcastle singer-songwriter – who graced the first ever cover of Rolling Stone UK – delivered the update in a new episode of Johnson and Knopfler’s Music Legends, which sees Brian Johnson and Knopfler interview musicians such as Fender, Tom Jones, Nile Rodgers and Cyndi Lauper.

In his forthcoming interview, as Music News reports, Fender said of his next record: “We have been recording and recording and making loads of stuff but it got to the point where I thought, ‘We don’t need to get this out yet. We need to get it right’.

“For the second one [Seventeen Going Under], we rushed to get that out and the third one we started rushing and I thought, ‘No, we have got to take the time’.

“I want to do the best I possibly can. I’d rather it be late and great than early and shite,” he added. “What we have got so far I am absolutely over the moon with but I want to give it that bit more time and more thought.”

Fender is yet to confirm solid release details of his third album, but he shared QR codes for preorders at his huge shows at Newcastle’s St James Park in 2023 and said it would arrive “some time next year”.

More recently, he confirmed he was in the studio with The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel, leading to speculation that a collaboration between the pair could be on the way.

In January, he also joined forces with Vermont singer Noah Kahan on a spirited version of ‘Homesick’

Fender is set to headline Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall this summer.
