If you can look past 2016's numerous celebrity deaths, you will also remember that many weeks were filled with the saga of Samsung's 'exploding' Note 7 woes.

Well Samsung has spent time fully investigating what caused the phablet's habit of catching fire, and while there was suspicion at the time that the device's battery was the cause of the fault – it seems that theory has now been confirmed.

The confirmation comes from an insider who anonymously spoke to Reuters ahead of the investigation's official publish. Samsung declined to comment on the matter.

Samsung is of course keen to make sure no such dangerous faults exist in its next device, the Galaxy S8.

The fault caused recalls of millions of Note 7s and resulted in a massive £4.3 billion blow to the South Korean company's operating profits – so it certainly will not want to relive such an episode.

"They've got to make sure they come clean and they've got to reassure buyers as to why this won't happen again," said Bryan Ma, a Singapore-based analyst told Reuters.

What with customers cars and property having been set alight by the incendiary device, those reassurances will certainly have to be made.
