The Sandman season two has finally received the greenlight and entered production, with its creator Neil Gaiman sharing a candid note marking its past and potential future.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, The Sandman has become one of Gaiman’s most popular and critically praised works to date and one of the most celebrated DC graphic novels of recent years.

After many failed attempts at adapting it for the big screen, Netflix produced a star-studded 11-episode arc in August 2022. After being warmly received by fans and critics alike, questions quickly started being asked about more episodes, with its future initially clouded in doubt.

However, following Gaiman’s confirmation in late November, The Sandman season two is officially a go. It’s early days but here’s everything we know about it so far.

When will The Sandman season 2 be released?

Production on The Sandman’s second series has only just begun, so it’s a little too early to know exactly when it will arrive on Netflix.

Interestingly, the streamer hasn’t specifically labelled this new batch of episodes as the show’s second series. Instead, they’ve stated that they’ve ordered new episodes which could impact how many instalments this new adventure ultimately contains.

Is there a trailer for The Sandman season 2?

There’s no trailer for The Sandman season two just yet but Netflix have treated us to a very short renewal announcement video.

Showing The Sandman AKA Dream’s helm slowly emerging from a pool of black sand, the video ended with the phrase “the dream continues…”

What is the plot of The Sandman season 2?

So far, it’s too early to tell what might happen in new episodes of The Sandman, with Netflix having only released one image featuring Tom Sturridge as Dream and Mason Alexander Park as Desire.

Production is currently underway in London after it was delayed by the recently-concluded Hollywood strikes.

While plot details are scarce, Netflix did release a statement from Gaiman in which he commented on the character’s journey and route to the screen. The note ended positively by saying that “good things are coming.”

Read Gaiman’s full note below:

“We never know where our dreams will take us. Thirty-five years ago today, the first issue of The Sandman was released and set many people and characters on paths that seemed, even at the time, so unlikely as to be impossible. Back then most comics featured superheroes. Sandman wasn’t that. It wasn’t like anything else, but magically (the magic consisting of hard work, youthful overconfidence, and some key people who believed in the vision) we were given the opportunity to tell the story I had in my head and bring Morpheus and the rest of the Endless to life.

“A little over 36 years ago, in October 1987, the worst storm in at least 500 years left my house without power and my family trapped in our little village by fallen trees, and I spent my time writing an outline for the first eight issues of Sandman.

“Thirteen months later, in November 1988, the first issue of Sandman hit the comics shops.

“Like those who walk a path in Destiny’s garden, I look back and see one clear path stretching behind me. At times on this journey the way forward seemed impossible, and I don’t think I could have conceived of the impact that these characters would have on individuals or on the world. When I look at the path ahead, though, I don’t see darkness. I see how the world of The Sandman continues to grow and evolve and take new forms.

“This week we officially restart production on the next sequence of stories of The Sandman for Netflix. Genius showrunner Allan Heinberg and the countless people in front of and behind the camera are building something endlessly special, and bringing these stories to life in a way that would once have been unimaginable.

“A journey is beginning that will take us from Destiny’s garden to Hell, from the Heart of the Dreaming to Ancient Greece and revolutionary France, and from there to places even I cannot quite imagine on the screen. I will be patient. Good things are coming.”

Who is in The Sandman season 2?

The full cast for The Sandman season 2 is yet to be revealed. (Netflix)

Much like its plot, the full cast for The Sandman season two is still under wraps, although from the one set photo we’ve seen, we know that Sturridge and Alexander Park will be back as Dream and Desire. After all, it’d be hard to have new episodes of The Sandman without its titular hero.

Other than that, it’s anyone’s guess as to who might pop up when the show returns.

Season one included a who’s who cast that spanned people like Patton Oswalt as Matthew The Raven, Jenne Coleman as Johanna Constantine, David Thewlis as John Dee, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer and Mark Hamill as Mervyn Pumpkinhead.

While some of these characters had their arcs wrapped up in season one, others may return for more dreaming in season two. Plus, with the casting-bar already set very high, it’s a safe bet that we can expect some other exciting names to join The Sandman’s latest fantasy.
