Netflix's adaptation of fantasy favourite The Sandman is set to roll cameras next month.

First announced back in July 2019, the series was originally meant to begin production this May, but the coronavirus pandemic naturally meant a delay.

Posting on Twitter yesterday (September 27), original author Neil Gaiman offered an exciting update.

"It's starting to feel real. We begin shooting in 3 weeks, lockdowns permitting. #SandmanonNetflix," he tweeted next to a section of a script.

Gaiman's enjoyed a fruitful couple of years in the TV 'biz, having shepherded the Good Omens adaptation to the screen with the help of Amazon and the BBC.

His brilliant book American Gods has also been turned into a successful programme, starring Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle, and a Sandman audio drama recently launched on Audible with an all-star cast including Riz Ahmed, Michael Sheen, Samantha Morton and James McAvoy.

Previously, Gaiman told Digital Spy of The Sandman TV series: "The Netflix version is going to begin in 2021, so Morpheus will have been kept prisoner in the Netflix version for 105 years rather than 70 years…

"We'll take that one, see what that does. It's already in the scripts, it does interesting things because… if we were creating this character now, what gender would the character be?

"If we were creating the character now, who would they be? What would they be doing? And going on from there."

The Sandman audio drama is available for purchase from Audible right now, along with thousands of other titles.
