Sarah Palin has said that divine intervention was the reason for Donald Trump’s victory in the US Presidential Election – claiming that people prayed to God for America to ‘wake up’.

The former Governor of Alaska, who was one of the first Republican figureheads to endorse the President-elect, claimed that people were desperate for a change after seeing America travel down ‘the wrong road’.

But when questioned about faith, Ms Palin said that she had seen the ‘first hand’ effects of ‘divine providence’.

In an interview with controversial right-wing news outlet Breitbart, she said: ‘No doubt, divine providence played a huge role in this election. I will boldly proclaim that. I saw it first hand. I was there on the campaign trail. I saw how things were changing.’

‘I saw more and more people’s eyes open, and I think so much of that was based on the church in general, those people of faith who were praying to God that people would wake up.’

Ms Palin, who unsuccessfully ran as VP alongside John McCain in 2008, also spoke about the significance of so-called ‘prayer warriors’, and claimed that they were crucial in securing Trump’s victory.

‘Prayer warriors across the country, people who perhaps had never expressed their faith in a higher being before, knew that Jeez, we got to be on our knees asking for a change here, because we’re going down the wrong road’, she added.

‘I was so grateful to see so many people step up in that realm’.

The interview came shortly after it was claimed that Trump is considering appointing Palin as the head of the Veteran Affairs Department – which oversees the care of American military veterans.

If she takes up the post, it will be her first return to front-line politics since 2009 – when she stepped down as the Governor of Alaska to pursue an extensive career as a political pundit, establishing her own online network, the Sarah Palin Channel, in 2014.
