Scotland's sunshine is to come to a miserable end this week as the country is set to see at least two days of persistent wet weather.

After a scorching weekend which saw temperatures reach a sweaty 25C in some areas, forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning for rain to start on Wednesday (May 22) and will last until Thursday (May 23). The latest bout is thanks to an area of low pressure migrating from the southeast that will cover more of the UK as the week goes on.

According to the Met Office, some places could see between 60-80mm (2-3 inches) fall in 12-hours, and there is also a "low chance" of rainfall reaching 100mm (4 inches) elsewhere in this time - with chances of flooding to some homes and businesses, as well as possible power cuts. The warning is in place for midday tomorrow until 6pm on Thursday and spans across a wide part of the east, south and central Scotland.

Speaking on this week's forecast, Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Rudman reported: “Low pressure is going to influence our weather from the middle of this week, bringing some heavy rain to parts of the UK. Eastern areas are most likely to see the highest rainfall accumulations, though this will depend on the precise positioning of the low pressure.

"It is important to keep an eye on the forecast as the detail becomes clearer, and it is possible severe weather warnings will also be issued.”

As stated in the warning, a bout of "heavy rain" is set to migrate across northwest Scotland from Wednesday afternoon, with the most persistent seen over north and eastern hills. This will likely turn more showery on Thursday in central and southern areas.

Forecasters have not confirmed where the heaviest rains will fall, but there is a chance that it will move slowly over Moray and northern Aberdeenshire, and to a lesser extent, Lothian and Borders.

The national forecaster has advised those in affected areas to check if their property could be at risk of flooding and to prepare a plan if this is the case. It also states Give yourself to check road conditions if driving to avoid delays, or bus and train timetables, amending travel plans if necessary.

Looking at Tuesday's weather, it's clear and sunny skies for Scotland all day today with temperatures to remain in the high teens for most parts of the country.
