As Scotland gears up for its first Euros clash, many are only just coming to realise what national anthem truly is.

Although God Save The King serves as the official national anthem of England and Britain, Scots at football matches will typically sing Flower of Scotland - their unofficial anthem.

Confused Tweets emerged on X (formerly known as Twitter), with one questioning: "Is this officially the Scottish national anthem?" while another quipped about the seeming incongruity of GSTK [God Save The King] not being Scotland's tune too.

Individuals started realising that God Save The King might not be that well-liked in Scotland, with one stating: "I thought God Save the King was an English anthem that's what they play at England sporting events," adding: "Anyway, who in Scotland sings an anthem that had a verse written and included about having 'rebellious Scots to crush?'"

Although Flower of Scotland remains unrecognised by the Scottish government as the official national anthem, it holds popularity among the Scots. This crowd-pleaser also tops Europe's most streamed national anthems, racking up nearly 5 million plays on Spotify.

As we approach Scotland's match against Germany tonight (June 14), around 200,000 Scottish fans will gear up to proudly belt out their choice of anthem. It's not looking promising for the Tartan Army though, boasting slim odds of 9/1 for a win.

Even the animal kingdom is getting in on the action, with Walter the Orangutan from Dortmund Zoo predicting a win for Germany, as per the German embassy in London.

However, Theo the Tapir from Allwetterzoo Munster is backing Scotland to take the victory, while Hilla the Sea Lioness at Leipzig Zoo believes it'll end in a draw.
