A Northern Irish political party’s attempt to embrace the digital age went a bit sideways this morning.

The Social Democratic and Labour Party of Northern Ireland (SDLP) used Twitter’s new Periscope tool to live stream their manifesto, but viewers were left craning their heads after the broadcast began with the phone upside-down.

The SDLP, a social-democratic and Irish nationalist party who currently have three MPs in the House of Commons, announced their manifesto in Belfast this morning.

The party’s left-leaning stream was corrected midway through the broadcast when the videographer turned his phone. The good news: the mistake was only seen by around 15 people who tuned in to watch.

Despite the hiccup, the party can claim to be the first to live-stream their manifesto via Periscope – a tool that has been lauded by journalists as a brave new frontier for digital media.

The Liberal Democrats and UKIP also announced their manifestos today.
