Disturbing CCTV footage shows thief ransacking home of a 79-year-old man

Shocking CCTV footage shows a thief ransacking the home of a vulnerable 79-year-old man, who has been burgled four times in the last five months.

The unidentified burglar, armed with a flashlight and wearing a head torch, broke into the property in the early hours of Monday morning.

Footage shows him rifling through the man’s home as the unwitting resident, who is partially deaf, slept upstairs.

The incident, captured on three security cameras, happened in Selby, North Yorkshire, at around 12.30am on Monday.

The thief can be seen rummaging through the man's coat pockets and searching through paperwork laid out on his kitchen table.

He spotted two of the security cameras and took them with him but investigators were able to access the footage after it was digitally saved.

Police have released the footage and some images of the trespasser in a bid to have him identified and apprehended.

It's not known whether the man shown was the same person who carried out three other robberies at the same address within the past five months.

PC Tony Morton of North Yorkshire Police said: "It is absolutely appalling that this vulnerable elderly man has been targeted in his home four times since April this year.

"There were two burglaries as recently as August, where on both occasions the suspect has used the ATM at Sainsbury’s in Selby to take out cash from the victim's account.

"The victim is a 79 year old man who lives on his own. He is partially deaf and throughout this latest burglary he was asleep upstairs.

"We remain determined to do everything we can to bring those responsible for these offences to justice and we are asking for the public's help to identify this burglar to hopefully prevent a further occurrence."

Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
