It's no secret that Selena Gomez holds the title of the 'world's most followed woman' on Instagram. Over the years, the actor has garnered millions of online fans - 429 million to be exact - who regularly pore over her content and look up to her as their role model.

But while such a huge following obviously has its perks, it also comes with major responsibility - something that Selena has recently opened up about.

While speaking at the Time100 Summit in New York City, where she chatted all things mental health, beauty standards and social media, the 31-year-old also got candid about her position as Instagram's most-followed woman, admitting that it can sometimes be "frustrating."

One example is when she confirmed her relationship with music producer Benny Blanco late last year. At the time, many fans expressed their disappointment online, as they believed that he criticised her in an interview back in 2020.

Because of this, Selena had to take to Instagram to set the record straight, telling her fans that he's "the best thing that's ever happened" to her, and that "if you can't accept [her] at [her] happiest then don't be in [her] life at all."

While at the summit, she seemed to allude to situations like this and reasoned: "I find it frustrating and then I get a little mouthy, and I wanna defend people I love."

Selena then explained that this is why she regularly takes time away from social media. She said during that her breaks she is "more present" and "happier."

"I would actually get real phone calls [from] people telling me about their story, and I could actually hear it instead of going: 'Oh, I already know what you did today.' It's more human."
