Serial killer and rapist now works at a children’s school

A convicted serial killer and rapist has been discovered working at a school with children as young as four.

Karla Homolka, who was jailed for manslaughter for her role in the rape and murder of three teenage girls in the 1990s, has been volunteering at the Greaves Adventist Academy in Montreal, Canada.

The 47-year-old was convicted in 1993 alongside her then-husband Paul Bernando of the torture, rape and killing of schoolgirls Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy – as well as her own 15-year-old sister Taffy.

Shocked parents at the private Christian school spotted Holmolka dropping off and picking up her children at the academy, before finding out she had been spending time in classrooms alongside pupils.

One parent told City News: “We don’t want her here.

“How would you feel knowing that your child is interacting with a person who is a serial killer? It’s not right.”

The school has confirmed that Holmolka was asked to come in by a teacher for a show-and-tell class about knitting, while on another occasion she brought in a dog.

Homolka even volunteered to supervise nursery-school age on a school trip to the Montreal Science Centre but the school insists she was never left along with students and was not a regular volunteer.

The academy also confirmed they knew about her criminal past as Holmolka was required to undertake background checks.

They said in a statement: “The Quebec Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and the administration of Greaves Adventist Academy are committed to providing quality education and enriching learning experiences to its students.

“While we work through the concerns stated by parents and other stakeholders, we welcome those associated with the school to contact the Quebec Conference office of Education.”

Seventh-day Adventist Church spokesperson Stan Jensen added: “The school board was fully aware of who she is.

“She is not a regular volunteer, and can never be alone with any children, either in school or churches.”

Holmolka saw her sentence reduced to 12 years when she pleaded to manslaughter charges and testified against her ex-husband.

She split from Bernando while in prison and went on to marry her lawyer’s brother after being released in 2005.

The couple have three children together and briefly moved to the Caribbean before moving back to Canada in 2016.

Bernardo is currently serving a life sentence but he has a possibility of parole later this year.
