You shouldn’t go to the toilet ‘just in case’ - it can wreck your bladder

It’s a habit many of us get into before leaving the house to travel to work – going to the toilet ‘just in case’.

But could it actually be doing more harm than good?

Yes, according to one expert in bladder dysfunction – who claims that the habit can lead to people’s bladders shrinking.

So in the end, the habit of going to the toilet ‘just in case’ can mean that you need to go to the toilet more frequently.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Diane Wootton, a clinical physiotherapy specialist from Reading, says, ‘Many people go to the loo frequently because they think “I’d better go before I leave.”

‘It means your bladder won’t ever fill to a normal level (more than 200ml) because it’s often being emptied.’

Wootton says that if you don’t ‘stretch’ your bladder by letting it fill up, it will slowly weaken – meaning you’ll have to go to the toilet more often.

‘‘If it’s not stretched, it’ll weaken over time — meaning you really will need the loo all the time.
‘I once had a patient who went to the loo 22 times a day partly because of this habit.’
